What Are GED Preparation Classes?
GED preparation classes are instructional programs designed to help students study for the General Educational Development (GED) test. The GED test includes four main subjects: Math, Science, Social Studies, and Reasoning Through Language Arts. Prep classes provide instruction in these areas, sample questions, and practice exams that follow the real test format. Classes also often include test-taking strategies, personalized feedback, and support services like tutoring or academic advising.
Types of GED Preparation Classes
There are several types of GED classes to choose from, depending on a student's needs, schedule, and learning preferences.
1. In-Person GED Classes
In-person classes are held in classrooms at community colleges, adult learning centers, or public libraries. These classes offer direct instruction from certified teachers and the chance to interact with fellow students. They are a good option for anyone who learns better with face-to-face education and structured schedules.
2. Online GED Classes
Online GED classes are flexible and can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection. Platforms like GED.com, Khan Academy, and Study.com offer lessons, quizzes, and practice tests. Some online programs also offer live instruction and one-on-one tutoring for extra support.
3. Hybrid GED Classes
Hybrid classes mix online and in-person instruction. This option is perfect for people who want the structure of a classroom but need the flexibility of working from home. Many community colleges now offer hybrid versions of their GED programs.
4. Private GED Tutoring
Some students prefer one-on-one help from a private tutor. This allows for a customized study plan that targets individual strengths and weaknesses. Tutoring can be done in person or online, and tutors often adjust their teaching pace to suit the student’s needs.
Pricing for GED Preparation Classes
GED preparation costs vary depending on the program chosen. Below are a few common pricing ranges:
- Free GED Classes: Many nonprofit adult education centers and public libraries offer free classes. These are great for those on a tight budget.
- Community College Programs: These often charge $50–$150 per semester, which may include materials and practice tests.
- Online GED Courses: Paid online programs like Kaplan or Study.com typically cost $100–$250 for full access.
- Private GED Tutoring: Rates for tutors can range from $20 to $100 per hour, depending on experience and location.
Some programs may also offer payment plans, scholarships, or financial aid to make courses more accessible.
